Adaptive Experts Program

The Occupational Therapy department at Granite Falls Municipal Hospital and Manor is now offering clinical and behind the wheel driver assessments and training.

The evaluation process determines the extent of a disability to drive safely. Safety is our highest priority. The evaluation includes clinical and pre-driver screening and behind the wheel assessments: typical time to complete the evaluation is 1 1/2 to 2 hours. The Occupational Therapy clinical assessment looks at the client's medical and driving history, vision status, cognitive/visual processing, sensory motor skills, range of motion, reaction time and mobility skills. The behind-the-wheel portion focuses on vehicle entry/seating, operation of secondary controls, use of adaptive equipment if needed, vehicle operation, knowledge of traffic rules, judgment/decision making, visual awareness, attention, and ability to safely negotiate typical traffic environments.

The results of the evaluation are discussed with the client and a detailed written report with recommendations is sent to the client, the physician and/or the referral source.

Adaptive Experts is specifically geared toward comprehensive driver rehabilitation, offering on-site services throughout the Granite Falls area. We are uniquely qualified to provide thorough and clinical screening, behind the wheel evaluations and on-road training.

We are prepared to work with any type of disability, beginning or experienced drivers. Vehicle modifications for the handicapped driver are available. On-site service allows for evaluation and training in the client's own driving environment.

Client services include: Senior Drivers, Brain Injury, Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Neuropathy, Alzheimer's Dementia, Amputation, Learning/Cognitive Disability, Orthopedic Injuries, Spina Bifida, Arthritis, Post-Polio, Visual Impairment and others.

The behind-the-wheel driver training is specifically tailored for each client's needs. Training can be done in a regular car or in wheelchair accessible van. The vehicles are equipped with an instructor brake and, if needed, a full range of adaptive equipment.
